Description
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG), developed by Professor Vladimir Khavinson at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. Structurally, it is based on the amino acid composition of Epithalamin, an extract from the pineal gland. Since its first synthesis in 2000, Epitalon has established itself as one of the most intensively investigated peptides in longevity research.
The central research mechanism lies in telomerase activation. In studies on human fibroblasts, Epitalon-treated cells were shown to surpass the Hayflick limit: while control cells lost mitosis capability after passage 34, Epitalon-treated cells continued dividing even after passage 44 while maintaining telomere length. This makes Epitalon one of the few compounds for which telomerase activation in human somatic cells has been documented in research.
Secondarily, Epitalon acts on pineal gland function. In animal models, restoration of physiological melatonin profiles, normalization of circadian rhythm and neuroprotective effects are observed. Other documented effects include modulation of interleukin-2 mRNA, influence on AChE and BuChE, and geroprotective properties across multiple animal model systems.
In research setups, Epitalon is typically used in cycles (e.g. 10 days), not continuously. The substance is administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly.

Risks & Safety
Epitalon is considered well tolerated per study reports. Across the available studies from the Khavinson program, no significant toxic effects have been documented over several decades.
Observed in research and user reports:
- Injection site: mild redness, pressure or transient irritation at the injection site is the most common observation.
- Circulation: isolated reports of brief fatigue or mild warmth shortly after application.
- Concentrated data: a large part of the research originates from the Khavinson institute and is little independently replicated internationally. The telomerase-activating effect also raises mechanistic questions that are not yet conclusively resolved in the literature.
- No long-term data: robust long-term human studies do not exist. The favorable profile rests primarily on animal models and short-term anecdotal experience.
