Description

HMG (Human Menopausal Gonadotropin, also menotropin) is a compound traditionally extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women, and in modern setups available in synthetic or recombinant form. In contrast to HCG (which shows primarily LH activity), HMG contains both FSH and LH activity in a defined ratio (typically 1:1 in 75iu per vial).

In the research context of the HPG axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal), HMG is a central tool for studies aiming to simultaneously address both gonadotropin pathways. FSH activity stimulates follicular development in ovaries and Sertoli cell function in testes in preclinical models. LH activity addresses theca and Leydig cell steroidogenesis. This dual activity makes HMG a distinct research tool.

The combination is mechanistically sensible because both gametogenesis and steroid hormone secretion in the reproductive axis depend on both gonadotropins. Studies that only address one component (e.g., HCG only) provide incomplete data for comprehensive HPG research.

In research setups, HMG is typically used subcutaneously or intramuscularly in preclinical models. The half-life is in the range of several hours, allowing daily to every-other-day application intervals.

HMG is available in 75iu vials as 10-vial packs.

Risks & Safety

HMG is established as a gonadotropin in research literature, but with its dual FSH and LH activity it intervenes broadly in the reproductive hormone axis.

Observed in research and user reports:

  • Hormone axis intervention: the combined FSH and LH stimulation addresses both gametogenesis and steroidogenesis. In preclinical models this can shift the endogenous regulation of the HPG axis.
  • Estrogenic effects: as with other gonadotropins, increased steroid synthesis can lead to elevated estradiol and thus to estrogen-mediated effects such as water retention.
  • Injection site: redness, pressure or transient irritation at the injection site is among the most common observations, particularly with subcutaneous use.
  • No long-term data: robust human studies on longer-term non-clinical use do not exist. The profile rests on clinical fertility data and animal models.
