Description
Thymalin is a complex of polypeptides extracted from calf thymus and established in the Khavinson bioregulator school as a central compound for immune research. In contrast to synthetic mono-peptides like thymosin alpha-1 or KPV, thymalin is a defined multi-peptide mixture used in Russian research tradition since the 1970s as an immune modulator.
The research mechanism is multimodal. Thymalin contains multiple low-molecular peptides associated in preclinical studies with effects on T-cell differentiation, immune cell activation and thymic function. In animal models, thymalin has been described with restoration of age-related reduced thymus function, also making the compound interesting in anti-aging research contexts.
A particularity of thymalin: the compound data largely originates from Russian-language research literature, which has reduced international visibility. The Khavinson school at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology has produced substantial research on bioregulator peptides, placing thymalin in a broader research context with other Khavinson peptides (epitalon, pinealon, cerebrolysin, etc.).
In research setups, thymalin is complementary to synthetic immune compounds. The multi-component nature allows broader mechanism coverage but reduces mechanistic clarity compared to mono-peptide research.
