  • Snap-8 (acetyl octapeptide-3) is a cosmetic peptide of eight amino acids. It extends the better-known hexapeptide Argireline by two building blocks.62
  • The idea: the peptide mimics a piece of the protein SNAP-25 and thus disturbs the release of messengers at the nerve-muscle junction. The principle was shown with the related hexapeptide.21
  • With the hexapeptide wrinkle depth fell by up to 30 percent after 30 days. In a comparison study wrinkles around the eyes improved in 48.9 percent, on placebo in no one.23
  • There is no published study on Snap-8 alone. In a study with microneedle patches it was one of several active ingredients.54

What is Snap-8?

Snap-8 (acetyl octapeptide-3) is a cosmetic peptide marketed in skincare as a gentle alternative to botulinum toxin. It is an extension of the well-known argireline peptide and is meant to soften expression lines (forehead, eyes).

Important: Snap-8 is a topical peptide for the skin, not an injectable or oral agent. We carry it as a 10mg vial with freeze-dried powder for use on the skin, for example dissolved in a serum or cream. Do not inject.

Two routes to SNAP-25 and a different one

Snap-8 mimics SNAP-25 and is applied to the skin, botulinum toxin A cleaves SNAP-25 and is injected. GHK-Cu works in a completely different way.

How it works

Snap-8 mimics a part of the protein SNAP-25 and competes with it for a place in the so-called SNARE complex. When this complex is slightly disrupted, the nerve endings release less messenger, gently dampening the muscle tension of expression lines. That is the same basic principle as botulinum toxin, just much milder and topical. The principle is documented for related SNAP-25 peptides (Gutierrez, 1997; argireline: Blanes-Mira, 2002).

What the research shows

Snap-8 is described in cosmetic research as a topical anti-wrinkle peptide, with manufacturer data on reduced wrinkle depth. According to the manufacturer it is considered somewhat more effective than its predecessor argireline. Published data mainly concern the related argireline (Blanes-Mira, 2002) and a study with microneedle patches in which Snap-8 was one of several ingredients (Avcil, 2020). There is no independent clinical study on Snap-8 alone, which should be noted honestly.

Values according to the abstract. Besides Snap-8 the patches contained other peptides, adenosine and seaweed extracts. Which share is due to Snap-8 cannot be read from this. No skin reactions occurred.

What is Snap-8?

A cosmetic peptide of eight amino acids (acetyl octapeptide-3). It is the hexapeptide Argireline extended by the building blocks alanine and aspartic acid. It is applied to the skin in creams or serums.62

Are there studies on Snap-8?

Not on Snap-8 alone. PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov contain no study (as of October 2026). There is a study with microneedle patches in which Snap-8 was one of several active ingredients. There are also studies on the related hexapeptide. The information here is not a recommendation for use.54

How is Snap-8 meant to work?

It mimics a piece of the protein SNAP-25. SNAP-25 is part of the SNARE complex that releases messengers from nerve endings. In the lab the related hexapeptide disturbed this complex and inhibited messenger release, with similar potency but much lower efficacy than botulinum toxin A.21

With the related hexapeptide wrinkle depth in healthy women fell by up to 30 percent after 30 days. In a comparison study with 60 participants wrinkles around the eyes improved in 48.9 percent after 4 weeks, on placebo in no one. With patches of several active ingredients fine lines decreased by 25.8 percent in 12 weeks.234

Which side effects are known?

There are no data on Snap-8 alone. The related hexapeptide was neither toxic when swallowed nor irritating to the skin at high amounts. In the patch study no skin reactions occurred. The entry advises testing on a small area first.24
