What is boldenone cypionate?

Boldenone cypionate is boldenone with a cypionate ester attached. Boldenone itself is testosterone with an extra double bond between the first and second carbon atoms, chemically 1-dehydrotestosterone. The compound is better known as the undecylenate, which comes from veterinary medicine under the brand name Equipoise.

The cypionate is the shorter of the two esters. The active compound in the body is the same, it is simply released faster from the depot in the muscle. In the range, boldenone cypionate comes as an oily injectable solution at 200 mg/ml.

How it works

Boldenone binds to the androgen receptor and, like other anabolic steroids, increases protein synthesis and nitrogen retention in muscle. Its signature is a marked stimulation of blood formation: the share of red blood cells (hematocrit) rises. This is often linked to more endurance and a stronger pump, but it also thickens the blood.

The extra double bond slows down aromatase. Boldenone is therefore converted to estrogen less than testosterone, in practice about half is the figure usually quoted. That does not make it free of estrogenic effects. The 5-alpha reduced form of boldenone is dihydroboldenone (DHB, 1-testosterone), which has its own entry as a separate product.

Gains on boldenone are considered slow and fairly moderate. Many users also report a clearly increased appetite. Solid human data on the profile are scarce, so the picture relies on general steroid pharmacology and animal data.

Cypionate or undecylenate?

Both products deliver the same active compound, only the ester differs. The undecylenate is a very long ester with a half-life of about 14 days. The cypionate is shorter: for testosterone the prescribing information gives about 8 days, for boldenone cypionate itself there is no human measurement.

  • Blood levels: with the cypionate, levels rise faster and also drop faster after stopping.
  • Active content: the shorter ester weighs less. By calculation, 1 mg of cypionate holds about 0.70 mg of boldenone, 1 mg of undecylenate about 0.63 mg.
  • Frequency: two injections per week keep levels stable, with the undecylenate one is often enough.
  • Build-up: boldenone still builds slowly, the cypionate only shortens the time until blood levels plateau.

Injection

Boldenone cypionate is usually injected intramuscularly, into the glutes, thigh or shoulder. With long esters subcutaneous use is possible too, but no more than about 0.5 ml should go into one spot. At 0.75 to 1.5 ml per dose, intramuscular is therefore usually more practical.

  • Draw up with a thicker needle, inject with a thinner one (23G to 25G).
  • Disinfect the rubber stopper and the injection site with alcohol first, use every needle only once.
  • Inject slowly and rotate sites regularly.
  • Never share a vial. Case reports of abscesses and hepatitis almost always trace back to non-sterile technique or shared vials.

What the research shows

Boldenone is mainly a veterinary compound. A review of testosterone, boldenone and nandrolone in horses describes decades of use for muscle building, while noting that the evidence on its effects is thin even in animals (Dirikolu, J Vet Pharmacol Ther 2023). There are no controlled human studies on either the undecylenate or the cypionate.

The general pharmacology of anabolic steroids is well described: binding to the androgen receptor, the role of aromatase and 5-alpha reductase and the typical side effects (Kicman, Br J Pharmacol 2008). For athletes, a review summarizes effects on strength, body composition, lipids, hormones and the liver (Hartgens and Kuipers, Sports Med 2004).

Animal data show that the effects reach beyond muscle. In a rat study with boldenone undecylenate over 8 weeks, inflammatory markers rose, thyroid hormones fell and TSH increased (El Deib, Int Immunopharmacol 2021). These are high doses in animals and not directly transferable, but they are a reason to keep an eye on blood work.

Research status

Where the research stands

ClinicalTrials.gov lists no trial with boldenone, neither as cypionate nor as undecylenate. As of 25 Oct 2026. 9

  1. Preclinical Used in horses for decades, plus animal studies
  2. Phase 1 no registered trial
  3. Phase 2 no registered trial
  4. Phase 3 no registered trial
  5. Approval not yet
Not approved for humans. Boldenone is a veterinary compound, ChEMBL lists boldenone undecylenate without approval and boldenone cypionate not at all.3

So far there is no registered trial in humans. 9

Side effects

  • Hematocrit: the key issue with boldenone. Thicker blood raises the risk of thrombosis and strains the heart. Measure regularly.
  • Blood pressure: rises in many users, partly because of the higher hematocrit.
  • Estrogen: weaker than with testosterone, yet water retention or gynecomastia are still possible in predisposed users.
  • Lipids: HDL drops and the lipid profile shifts unfavorably.
  • Natural production: is suppressed. Without a testosterone base, low libido and low drive are likely. PCT becomes a topic afterwards.
  • Androgenic: acne and hair loss in predisposed users.
  • Other: strong appetite, at higher doses some report restlessness or anxiety.

Boldenone is on the WADA prohibited list and remains detectable in testing long after the last injection.

Storage

Store the oily solution at room temperature and away from light, ideally in the original box. Do not put it in the fridge: in the cold the compound can crystallize. If crystals do form, warm the vial in your hand or in warm water and swirl it until the solution is clear again. Keep out of reach of children.

FAQ

Common questions about Boldenone Cypionate

Short answers, each backed by the sources below.

How do cypionate and undecylenate differ?

Only the ester. It is cleaved off in the body, leaving the same boldenone. The cypionate ester is shorter and lighter: by calculation each milligram contains 69.8 percent boldenone, the undecylenate 63.3 percent. How fast levels rise and fall with the cypionate has not been measured in humans.10

Has boldenone been studied in humans?

No. ClinicalTrials.gov lists no trial and there are no controlled human studies of either the cypionate or the undecylenate. Boldenone was developed for veterinary use and has been used in horses for decades. According to a review there are hardly any studies on its effects even there.938

What do animal studies show?

In an 8-week rat study with boldenone undecylenate inflammation markers rose, thyroid hormones fell and TSH rose. A second study saw rising liver and kidney markers and falling HDL, a third a heavier heart and raised markers of heart muscle damage. In rabbits liver and kidney markers also rose. The amounts were high and the results cannot be transferred directly to humans.4678

What is known about anabolic steroids in general?

Anabolic steroids bind to the androgen receptor and promote muscle building and strength. In studies with athletes strength rose by 5 to 20 percent and weight by 2 to 5 kg, mainly through more fat-free mass. They stimulate red blood cell production. Aromatase and 5-alpha reduction convert part of them into oestrogen or stronger androgens.12

Which side effects do the reviews name?

For anabolic steroids in general: falling HDL cholesterol, rising blood pressure, acne, more body hair, more aggression and the body's own hormone production staying suppressed for months after stopping. For boldenone itself there are no human data.21

What risks does the injection itself carry?

A literature review found 14 described infections after steroid injections: 8 abscesses, 3 HIV infections, one each of hepatitis B and C and one fungal eye infection. The authors consider them avoidable with education and sterile technique. According to the review a quarter of adolescent users in the USA shared needles.5

Glossary

Terms explained briefly

Dotted words in the text open these explanations directly.

5-alpha reduction
Conversion by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. Testosterone becomes DHT this way, boldenone becomes DHB.
Androgen receptor
Protein inside the cell that testosterone and its derivatives bind to. Genes are then read, for example for muscle building.
Aromatase
Enzyme that converts part of the androgens into oestrogen.
Ester
An attached acid chain. It makes the steroid oil-soluble and sets how fast it is released from the depot. It is cleaved off in the body.
Haematocrit
Share of red blood cells in the blood. If it rises a lot, the blood gets thicker.
Intramuscular
Into the muscle, for example the glute, thigh or shoulder.
PCT
Post-cycle therapy: the phase after stopping in which the body's own hormone production is meant to restart.
Subcutaneous
Into the fat layer just under the skin.
TSH
The pituitary hormone that drives the thyroid. If it rises, the thyroid is usually underactive.
Undecylenate
A very long ester. It releases the compound from the depot especially slowly.
WADA
World Anti-Doping Agency. Its prohibited list applies to competitive sport.

Practice

PCT / after coming off

Anabolic substances suppress the body's own testosterone production in the research context. Anyone who comes off a cycle (rather than running it continuously) typically uses a post-cycle therapy (PCT) to restart the natural axis (HPTA).

The standard scheme in the research/literature context combines a SERM (tamoxifen and/or clomifene, alternatively enclomiphene) over roughly four weeks, optionally preceded by HCG to re-sensitise the testes before the SERM block. An aromatase inhibitor (anastrozole/exemestane) belongs more to on-cycle estrogen control than to the PCT itself.

Tip: order the PCT items together with the cycle so they are already on hand when you come off.
